A Class Act

Shortly after Joan passed away, the President of the Canadian Collie & Shetland Sheepdog Association contacted me to ask if the Club could do a tribute to Joan in their magazine "Bright Eyes and Bushy Tales" to recognize her contributions to the breed. I was very touched by this and of course gave the okay, and also permission to use some photos from Joan's memorial site for the tribute.

Delayed by the postal strike, our complimentary issue arrived in the mail today. Neither Terry, Joan nor I were members of this club at the time of her death, so they were kind enough to mail us a copy of the magazine containing the tribute to Joan. I hadn't said much to Terry about it - I watched today as he read the lovely tribute to his mother in the CC&SSA magazine with tears in his eyes. Her birthday would have been this Sunday, July 17, so the timing is fitting.

It's often the little things that really count. One of the things that meant the most to me was a comment left on Joan's memorial site by a woman that none of us have any idea who she is, that sat next to Joan at the ASSA National in 1988 and remembered Joan all these many years later as a person who chatted to a newbie, shared her knowledge and made her feel welcome. That was Joan in a nutshell. This stranger was touched enough to write a lovely comment on someone she met once - 23 years after the fact.

Thank you, Canadian Collie and Shetland Sheepdog Association, for taking the time to remember someone who made a difference. Your kindness will always be remembered.

Sheltie Ambassadors

We love getting pictures and updates on any of the Whitegates Shelties, so we were thrilled with the latest from two girls that are regularly out and about spreading all kinds of great PR for our breed.

Lacie (below) and half sister Jovi (a tri litter sister to our Sugar) were at the Scotiabank CHIN Picnic on the Canada Day long weekend participating in three shows a day and meeting and greeting the crowds (250,000+ in attendance every year).

Each dog performs their "specialty" and of course for Lacie that's skateboarding. Jovi is the weaves champ.

Lacie is pictured on her board at the CHIN picnic at Exhibition Place in downtown Toronto. As her owner said, the only thing that would make the picture even better would be some graffitti on the wall for this little street rider!

Lacie looks sooooo much like her dam, our Sizzle - Ch. Whitegates Icy Hot. Lacie is sired by Pop Star.

I'm so proud of them both and their owner. I love it that these girls are out promoting our breed to so many people and having a blast doing it! Not to mention getting our beautiful blue and black Shelties out there for JQP to see and appreciate.

Nice going ladies!
